The creature has always evolved but now some how it has managed to mutate in to something really different.Unity is backed by fanatics who want to make its very simple to use and sever as a single solution for conventional as well as touch screen users.Hence omitting all the stuff that made linux the best and the pro users are not happy about it.
we are seeing changes at all of the demographics of the community moving to such UI. Even gnome is gone this way and even made it self more deviated from the standard form. But the good thing about gnome3 is that it will be used by most of the dostros expect Ubuntu. That means better community support and there is the news of Ubuntu coming up with gnome for the user that would like to use it it will me made available. But still Unity is far more familiar to a user than the Gnome 3 Interface Which would mean Users may shift from other distros to Ubuntu.
But the problems lies in the fact that people who use these operating systems as their main machines are a little disappointed because the loss of the customizations that made linux great and so personal.For now a simple alternative Interface for the people who love the old gnome interface is the use of light weight XFCE GUI. Which servers well for the power user. Canonical has promised at of its users that in the 11.10 release the customization of animations and transitions will be back as well as the use of applets. I suggest they stick to there promise otherwise a whole set of users may switch to other distributions and flavors. The future of Linux may see a dramatic change if these interfaces are excepted by the user. lets Hope For The Best.
